31 August is the date of when Tanah Melayu/Malaya (1957) and North Borneo/Sabah (1963) achieved independence 
(( ooh, and I'd like to clear out that 31 August is NOT the independence day for Malaysia. Heck, Malaysia didn't even exist during that time! Plus, I don't think Malaysia was even independent, since it's a federation and was never colonized by any country.
Sarawak has 'Sarawak Day' and Malaya's independence is celebrated by 11 states + 2 federal territories... MY POOR BBY NEEDS ATTENTION *crais* ))
But still, happy independence day!
